Spark Arrestor

You must have a U.S. Forestry Approved spark arrestor to ride in the National Forest. Many off-road motorcycles come equipped with one from the factory. To see if have one, look for a stamp on the side of the exhaust silencer. The stamp will specifically say U.S. Forestry Approved. If there is no stamp you do not have one. Add-on spark arrestors as complete silencers are available or you may need to rivet or bolt one on to your stock silencer.


Excessive noise is a BIG issue as it is used to limit our right to ride. With the price of travel, entry fees, and other costs associated with riding a dual sport or off-road motorcycle being so high, riders must take time to make sure their exhaust meets sound and spark arrestor land-use laws. We urge all riders to include a review of their exhaust and silencer on their bike prep check list before riding on public lands.

Fuel Range

Any time you are planning a ride in the Rocky Mountains, it is necessary to carry extra fuel. Our events will bring you in close proximity to gas stations, but you still need to either have a large capacity fuel tank or carry extra fuel in a bottle with you.

Acerbis, IMS and Clarke offer larger capacity fuel tanks that are available for most dirt bikes.

You will need at least 2.5 to 2.9 gallons. Trying to maintain a steady throttle hand will help to maximize your fuel range. Aluminum fuel bottles can be purchased at most outdoor stores and are well suited for carrying extra fuel in your pack.

The trails and roads we ride in the Rocky Mountains are in the 7,000 to 12,000 foot altitude range. We would suggest setting up your bike for 10,000 feet and be right about the middle. Consult your owner’s manual or local experts for more specific instructions. Motorcycle set up is a very important part of having an enjoyable ride in the Rockies. If you’d like to have your motorcycle correctly jetted for altitude, we would suggest contacting local expert Sean Barr at Mountain Tech Motorsports in Buena Vista. Or you could just ride something fuel injected.

Bike Protection

The Rocky Mountains have some of the most rocky, technical and challenging trails anywhere in the U.S. Your motorcycle must be capable of withstanding some severe abuse.

Skid plates, chain guides, disk guards, radiator guards and hand guards are important items to install before you come. Even with these precautions, things still have a way of going wrong ….


Plan to have installed new rubber front and rear before you come. Please choose a tire that will have the least impact on the environment. With a huge variety of terrain, tire choice can be somewhat mind boggling. Many riders are now using a Trials universal on the rear and a hard pack knobby on the front. Trials tire have proven to be a good choice in rocks and roots, but also handle soft terrain quite well. Trials tire are friendly to the environment. We like the Kenda Equilibrium Hybrid DOT Tire.

Tire pressure depends on the tire, but generally run them a few pounds higher than you normally would. Heavy-duty tubes are a good investment to keep your trip moving forward. The new tubeless products also work well. Anything you can do to keep from getting or changing a flat tire on the trail.

While we are talking about tires and tubes, we should also mention dual air chamber system. Some people swear by Tubliss. The Dual Chamber allows you to run lower air pressure for more traction.

Tools and Spare Parts

A good quality fanny pack or backpack is a necessity for any long excursion or off-road ride in the Rocky Mountains.

Short list of recommended items:

• Make sure you carry enough spares to get you back to camp in any event. Make a checklist of some of the most common bolts and have a couple spares. Safety wire and duct tape are very handy.

Riding Gear

Weather conditions change in a moment’s notice at altitude. Being equipped to handle the changes make for a more enjoyable ride. The temperature can and will change from 80 degrees at camp to as low as 40 degrees on high mountain passes.

We recommend an Enduro-style waterproof jacket with removable sleeves. These Coats will have an assortment of pockets for your cell phone or camera or anything you want to access frequently. Regular MX style riding gear will work as long as you have a raincoat or some type of jacket when things get ugly.

We also suggest that you waterproof your riding boots, as there are quite a few creek and water crossings. If possible, bring two sets of gear so that you have a dry set to change into.

A good quality fanny pack or backpack is necessary for long excursions in the mountains. Keep in mind that you are carrying essentials to get you back to a major road if you have a problem.  A back pack also gives you clothing options and can double as a hydration system.

Out-of-state OHVs

Out-of-state residents who bring OHVs into Colorado must purchase a Colorado Non-Resident OHV permit which is valid from the date of purchase through the following March 31. Since this is only a use permit, no renewal notice will be sent to non-resident permit holders; you must purchase a new permit each year you come to Colorado with your OHV.

Registration decals must be affixed permanently on the upper forward-half of the OHV in a location where the decal can be easily seen.

2 Days of Epic SingleTrack riding along the Continental Divide from the Ponderosa Lodge, near the South Fork of the Arkansas River.  Providing you with the opportunity to ride trails you’ve heard about, but never had the opportunity to ride. A perfect environment to enjoy and share the camaraderie of your friends and like-minded enthusiasts.

Day 1 elevations - 7,500 to over 11,000 feet. 100 + miles
Day 1 will cover 100+ miles with over 60% Singletrack. Less than 10% pavement if you ride the whole loop. Be prepared for water crossings and a few rocks. Elevations up to 11,000 feet.

Day 2 will take you on 2 track and dirt roads, past old mines and up and over the divide to the iconic Singletrack on the opposite side of the mountains you rode the previous day. Day 2 covers more epic Rocky Mountain Singletrack. And Day 2 has even less pavement than day 1! The Day 2 route will be approximately 100+ miles at elevations from 8,000 to over 12,000 feet above sea level.

You will ride through remote, rugged locations that are often inaccessible by truck. You will need to carry your own tube, plug kit, tool kit, air, lighter, first aid, water, snacks, tow strap, etc. and know how to use them, including knowing how to repair or change a flat tire.

Carry a cell phone and we highly recommend the use of a satellite-operated tracking and rescue device such as a SPOT – you will often be out of cell phone range. We also recommend you obtain appropriate healthcare insurance before participating in any of our club rides.

Hazards DO exist on our routes, such as downed trees, washouts, rocks, etc. and will NOT be marked in any fashion. All routes are publicly-accessible so you may also encounter other riders and traffic. Riders need to use caution and common sense at all times and stay to the right when possible, particularly around blind turns.

We discourage you from riding alone and encourage everyone to use the BUDDY SYSTEM and pair up with at least one other rider so that you can look after each other. Your ride will be enhanced if you ride with others who are of the same skill level, are riding similar motorcycles, and have compatible desires for the ride (speed of travel, how often to stop for a rest and pictures, etc.). We won’t have any checkpoints throughout the day or sweep riders to keep track of you.

We may provide “outriders” to help you if you need a shortcut to the finish or have questions along the way, but they should NOT be considered “sweep” riders: they are not medics, will not be available to fix bikes or change flats, will not have extra parts for you, or be there to hold your hand.

If you get stranded we will of course do what we can to bail you out, however if we need to arrange evacuation, medical aid, or any other form of rescue assistance for you there may be a reasonable charge associated with that assistance.

There is a 10 Rider Minimum on the 3 Singletrack Rides this Year. If the minimum Number of riders is not met 10 days in Advance of the ride dates Entry Fees will be refunded less PayPal fees. Maximum of 16 riders.

Our rides are all-weather. If two or more riders participate the ride will not be cancelled, regardless of weather conditions, and refunds will not be given for shared group expense amenities nor will they be transferred to another ride or rider.

If Exit Tours M/C cancels a ride we will make all attempts to provide an equivalent ride on an alternate date. If we do this then your prepaid shared group expense payment may be transferred to the new ride date, or if you cannot attend the new date, a 100% refund for shared group expenses will apply. If no such ride is offered then all prepaid shared group amenities payments will be refunded. There will in no case be refunds given for Pay Pal fees.


This is not a guided ride and not a ride for novices.  In fact, if you’re not an experienced rider – This is NOT the ride for you.

Anyone that is capable with a Singletrack off-road street legal motorcycle.

Our club’s adventures are shared group expense and dirt-oriented; our rides vary in elevation, mileage, weather and types of trails/roads and often cover long distances.

We work to minimize pavement mileage, maximize scenery and fun, and generally only use paved roads as necessary to tie dirt loops together and access amenities. Our rides cover routes you cannot put together on a map. If you could put the routes on a map, you couldn’t follow the map as trail markings in the Rocky Mountains are, even in designated riding areas, often missing, non-existent, outdated, misplaced or confusing.


Chaffee County, Colorado should truly be called a ‘Mecca’ for off-road motorcyclist’s. The Arkansas River starts to the North in Leadville and exits the Rocky Mountains to the East through Salida, which means ‘Exit’ in Spanish. There are more 14 thousand foot peaks in Chaffee County than in any other County in the Continental U.S. The Continental Divide runs through the Western part of the County and the Rio Grande River watershed is the Southern boundary. There are hundreds of miles of old mining roads, railroad right of ways and singletrack trails in the area.

Plus one of the only portions of the Continental Divide trail open to motorcycles.

Exit Tours M/C rides start on private property and usually end at a lodge or private campground where overnight camping or rooms may be available for the group. We also may provide group meals at our destinations or on private property along the trail all as part of the shared group expense.

Exit Tours Motorcycle Club rides are not Guided.

On these rides we will stop at intersections and point the way.

We recommend a street legal dirt bike and a trials rear tire on the terrain the route charts covers. We will stay off roads as much as possible but we do use PAVEMENT TO TIE LOOPS TOGETHER. We will leave early and keep stops to a minimum. You ride at your own pace and we do not ride in large groups. We also highly recommend you come with a friend and be responsible for each other all through the day.

Ponderosa Lodge Singletrack: 600cc or less street-legal, plated dirt bike with a trials rear tire and a knobby front for maximum fun.  We will be riding CHALLENGING singletrack trails and so a larger or factory dual-sport, type street motorcycle, will not be suitable.

Regardless of the ride type, gas stops are usually scheduled not much more than 60 miles apart…this means that your motorcycle MUST be capable of going at least 80-miles, before needing a fill-up. If your bike doesn’t have the necessary range you will need to carry extra gas with you.

On all rides, have your motorcycle geared for at least 70 mph so that you can keep up with traffic on any highway sections.

If you cancel for any reason, your $100 Deposit is Forfeited. If Exit Tours M/C Cancels your Deposit less PayPal Fees will be Refunded.

This will be a shared group expense ride, Club Ride all inclusive, with the exception of fuel from Saturday morning until Sunday evening.  

Ride Cost Guidelines:

Our adventures are either all-inclusive or generally have amenities available, such as meals, parking-meeting arrangements, lodging, and/or gear transport. The cost for these amenities is pre-paid by Exit Tours M/C for the whole group. Then the expenses are averaged out per rider based on projected attendance, and payable when you sign-up for a ride. Selecting these amenities is optional and their cost should not be considered payment for the ride. On multi-day rides we may place a hold on rooms and each rider may be responsible to make reservations and pay for their own room, or it may be included in the shared group cost.

These rides may be conducted without the turmoil of a permit as long as we limit the rides to less than 75 riders and conduct these rides on a self-guided, shared group expense, non-commercial basis.


Exit Tours Motorcycle Club rides are non-competitive and self-guided. They are for licensed, insured riders with street legal, quiet motorcycles with a USFS approved spark arrestor, but we do not inspect any motorcycles.

Our rides comply with USFS land use requirements, but there is no guarantee that it is permissible or legal to ride everywhere on our routes. Most USFS and BLM Motor Vehicle Use Maps are outdated, inaccurate, ambiguous, and difficult to read even for the rangers, but especially for the general public. Even in designated riding areas, USFS and BLM route signs are often missing, non-existent, outdated, misplaced and confusing. In many areas private property boundaries are not well defined or even posted.

It is possible that anyone following an Exit Tours Motorcycle Club route could get behind closed gates or ride somewhere they are not supposed to be and possibly get cited or yelled at. Every Exit Tours M/C member is advised of this in advance of our rides, and by participating takes full and sole responsibility for their actions and well-being, without exception.

Exit Tours Motorcycle Club rides are not competitions, nor are prizes or trophies awarded.

All participants are on their own, riding at their own pace, at their own risk, and always have the option to follow the
designated route or to follow another route of their choosing. Exit Tours M/C rides are free, non-competitive, non-
commercial, recreational club rides for members only.
